Obsidian Entertainment gaming has proven time and again that they create great single-player RPGs. Her next project is The Outer Worlds, created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, known for their work on Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.
The first-person-action RPG will appear on PC, PS4 and Xbox One and is set in a future in which mega-corporations will colonize and terraform new planets. It starts with the player leaving the cryosleep on a colony ship, only to find that the other inhabitants have not yet awakened. The outer worlds include the management of NPC factions, as well as a story that changes direction according to the player's choice. Right now it looks and sounds like a mish-mash of Fallout, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, and I'm very much on board.
There seems to be a lot of focus on vivid characters and environments, with a great sense of humor. It's wonderful to see a hardcore RPG that does not take you too seriously and I hope that sense of humor runs through the whole game. While your player character is voiceless, you will meet and recruit companions who have their own tasks and motives. You can choose dialogue options when dealing with NPCs in the open world, and your companions change their mind about you as a result of your actions.
The fight seems to be quite similar to review 3D Fallout games. It includes a kind of bullet-time capability that gives you extra time to aim the shot, but it does not replicate the targeted sighting of specific body parts like VATS. The RPG elements include a variety of social, technical and combat skills. So it looks like there are many ways to make your character the way you want it. Like other obsidian role-playing games, you can use your group's skills to work for your own.
